Health, Medical, and Human Services Pathway
Health, Medical, and Human Services Pathway
Connecting compassionate care with professional knowledge and skill, this pathway includes projects that focus on caring for others. Projects could range from academic research on trends in medicine or healthcare policy, to organizing a blood drive in the community, to hands-on work with others, such as volunteering at a personal care home. Job shadowing, comparative analysis research projects, certification/lifelong learning, and volunteering are beneficial to students considering careers related to Health, Medical, and Human Services.
Health, Medical, and Human Services Pathway Projects may include, but are not limited to the following:
- job shadowing a professional in one of the associated careers (e.g. medical professional, social worker)
- comparative research between different career pathways in this field (e.g. EMT vs nursing)
- taking courses to certify oneself in first aid procedures
- hosting a blood drive
- hosting a donation drive for a women/children’s shelter
Health, Medical, and Human Services Pathway verification may include, but is not limited to the following:
- Academic research in a specific field/topic related to the pathway (notes, bibliography, summary of findings)
- Copy of volunteer application, clearances/background check documentation
- Register of hours spent at volunteer location
- Emails – Communication with professionals, charities, event / volunteer locations
- Photographs at volunteer/event location (if permitted)
- Receipts for any related expenses (ex: If creating holiday games for residents at a personal care home, save receipts for any materials purchased.)
- Job shadowing evidence (See job shadowing guidelines.)
- Comparative research evidence (See comparative research guidelines.)
*Note: Projects that involve physical fitness or nutritional changes for a student must have a credentialed professional attached, preferably as the student’s mentor.
For instance, a student who trains for and runs a marathon for her project needs to work with a certified personal trainer throughout the process to ensure proper training techniques. This student may also choose to run with a more experienced marathon runner to aid in the training process, but the certified personal trainer needs to verify the student’s work.
